About Ocient:
Ocient is a hyperscale data solutions company headquartered in Chicago, IL, enabling organizations to analyze trillions to quadrillions of data records in seconds. Over the past five years, Ocient has built a SQL compliant data warehouse for Petabyte and beyond datasets that is 10x to 50x times faster than competitive OLAP databases.
Position Overview:
We're building a world-class team with the aim of delivering unmatched performance and scalability in the most demanding database environments. Ocient is seeking a Technical Product Manager – Performance & Storage who will own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for storage, query processing, and system performance across the Ocient offering.
This role is highly technical and will work hand-in-hand with engineering architects to profile, analyze, and document performance, identify bottlenecks, and champion initiatives that improve speed, scalability, and efficiency. You will be responsible for defining and communicating the performance roadmap and quantifying the business impact of performance improvements, while also approving release-level performance before customer delivery.
Candidates must have deep expertise in database internals, storage systems, and performance engineering. They should have experience in profiling complex workloads, tuning query engines, and driving architectural decisions that maximize throughput and minimize latency at scale.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with engineering architects to profile and document performance characteristics across Ocient’s product portfolio.
- Develop and maintain the performance and storage roadmap, aligning it with strategic product goals and business outcomes.
- Work with engineering to establish release-level performance benchmarks, review results, and approve releases for performance readiness.
- Identify and de-risk new workloads through simulation, synthetic data generation, and creative testing approaches.
- Collaborate with sales, customer success, and solutions engineering to translate customer workload performance requirements into product specifications.
- Quantify the business impact of performance initiatives and communicate their value to internal stakeholders and customers.
- Track competitive positioning in performance and scalability, ensuring Ocient’s offerings remain industry leading.
- Partner with product marketing to articulate performance differentiators in go-to-market messaging.
- Advocate for performance-related priorities during feature planning and prioritization.
Qualifications:
- BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
- 8+ years of professional experience in enterprise software, with a strong focus on databases, data warehouses, or large-scale data platforms.
- 5+ years of experience in database performance tuning, storage optimization, and/or query processing.
- Deep understanding of database internals (query optimizers, storage engines, indexing, distributed execution).
- Experience with analytical workloads and benchmarking (e.g., TPC-H, TPC-DS, etc).
- Strong understanding of hardware and systems-level factors affecting performance (CPU, memory, I/O, networking).
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical findings to business stakeholders.
- Track record of driving cross-functional initiatives from concept to delivery
Our Ideal Applicant:
Our ideal Performance & Storage TPM is obsessed with efficiency, scale, and reliability. They are as comfortable reading performance data as they are presenting a performance ROI case to executives. They thrive in data-driven discussions, can translate low-level metrics into business impact, and are driven to push the boundaries of what’s possible in large-scale data processing.
- Has experience setting performance SLAs/SLOs and holding releases accountable to them.
- Has worked on high-performance database platforms at scale — either as a product manager, performance engineer, or database architect.
- Has a track record of identifying and delivering performance wins that create measurable customer value.
- Is a self-starter who can take ownership from strategy through execution.
- Thrives in fast-paced, technical environments with ambitious goals.
